About Us

New Bern VITA formally AARP TaxAide has provided free income tax preparation service for over 30 years. We are located in the Christ Episcopal Church Harrison Center facility 311 Middle Street New Bern. We typically prepare as many as 1,000 tax returns each year. We operate a second site in the Pamlico County Senior Center 800 Main Street Alliance NC.

Our primary focus is preparing tax returns for the elderly and low to moderate-income taxpayers.​ New Bern VITA reports directly to the IRS/VITA Program Office in Raleigh, North Carolina. We operate under the direction of the IRS and adhere to all of their standards, regulations and testing requirements. All volunteers go through a rigorous training program and must be certified to IRS standards before they are allowed to prepare tax returns. Our site is evaluated each year by the IRS, both in quantity and quality of tax returns.
 
We are a 501 (c) (3) corporation, established in 2016 to facilitate the ability to receive funding/donations.  We have a five-member Board, none of whom receive any compensation.
